Government has backtracked again on the divisive move to layoff thousands of civil servants.
Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa came under attack from the Cabinet when he announced massive job cuts of 25 000, reducing the workforce to 273 000 by the end of 2017, slashing of salaries and suspension of bonuses for two years.
However, Labour minister Prisca Mupfumira said a civil service audit has only been carried out and government has 'no retrenchment plan'.
"We are not talking about retrenchment at the moment, but the time might come where we might have to retrench after the redeployment process and when we would have dealt with overstaffed areas".
As of August 1 this government had 166 452 workers.
She said government is running away from rehiring after sacking workers.
