Home Affairs Minister Ignatius Chombo yesterday denied reports that Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, four months ago, allegedly budged into Avondale Police Station and freed two senior executives employed at Zinara who had been arrested for corruption.

Chombo said that he was unaware of Mphoko's involvement in the release of former Zinara acting chief executive officer Moses Juma and non-executive director Davison Norupiri.

Mphoko was caught in the storm after he allegedly forced police to release top Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) executives arrested on corruption charges involving over $1 million.

Mphoko reportedly stormed Avondale Police Station on Wednesday night and demanded the release of acting Zinara chief executive officer Moses Juma and board member Davison Norupiri.

The two had been arrested earlier in the day for criminal abuse of office and fraud respectively by officials from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

Juma is accused of having authorised and approved various payments to TMS and trying to force Zinara acting finance director Precious Murove to sign the purported contract document.

According to the State, the figures involved would have required Zinara to follow tender procedures and a prejudice of $1 274 575 to Zinara and government.
