The seven jailed MDC activists who were arrested in May on charges of murdering a police officer have filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against a ruling denying them bail by the High Court in July. The papers were filed at the Supreme Court on Tuesday after High Court Judge Justice Tendai Uchena had granted them leave to appeal against the refusal of bail by the High Court.
Charles Kwaramba, the lawyer representing the seven said he hoped the matter will be heard before the end of the year. They have been in custody for seven months.
The seven are among 28 MDC activists who are facing charges of murdering a police officer at a shopping centre in Glen View, Harare. Among them is Solomon Madzore, the MDC Youth Assembly chairperson who was denied bail on Monday. Madzore is detained at the Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
