MDC-T president Morgan Tsvangirai has mocked social media movements saying their leaders don't have spine to topple President Robert Mugabe.
He said social media movement's leaders are not brave and "the champions have disappeared".
He was making reference to #ThisFlag frontman Pastor Evan Mawarire who fled to USA.
That was shortly after being released from remand prison.
"I don't feel any one social movement can cause change, unless you want a revolution" Tsvangirai is quoted saying by a South African publication.
"Of course #ThisFlag has caught up the imagination of the young digital generation, but unfortunately it's a bubble that has burst, because the champions have disappeared, they don't want to take the risk.
He added "They also know that without the MDC they have no basis to achieve the objective, without the structures on the ground".
Mawarire, the creator of the #ThisFlag movement, come under fire in some pockets of Zimbabwean society for abandoning the cause to seek safety in the USA.
Supporters of the #ThisFlag movement took to social media to voice their feelings of betrayal by Mawarire's failure to return to Zimbabwe.
Mawarire was briefly detained in July on charges of inciting violence which was later altered to the serious one of "subverting a constitutional government".
Following his release, Mawarire briefly settled in South Africa, touring the country and carrying out speaking engagements at universities and giving media interviews.
