'Give Tsvangirai a chance,' says Khupe

MDC vice president Thokozani Khupe has said President Robert Mugabe must resign to his rural Zvimba home and give Morgan Tsvangirai a chance to lead the country.
Addressing scores of women gathered in the Harare CBD to campaign against gender-based violence yesterday, Khupe said Mugabe had failed in his 36-year rule.
"The time has come for us to change, to say no to Mugabe and Zanu PF. Mugabe and Zanu PF do not have any moral nor political authority to stay in office any day longer.
"Vanofanirwa kubva and mese munoziva munhu anofanirwa kuenda kuState House, anogona kukuyambutsai (they must leave and you all know who should be at the State House, who can be able to take the country forward), that person is none other than . . .Tsvangirai," she said.
"Ipai mukana Tsvangirai (give Tsvangirai a chance)," Khupe demanded.
She claimed Tsvangirai's takeover would "bring peace in our homes and once we have peace in our homes, we will have peace in the whole world, we will have peace in our country".
"Izvezvi (right now) there is no peace . . . because we have no jobs, we don't have money, we can't even send our children to school, we can't even pay for our health bills, we can't even pay for electricity and water," Khupe said, adding that "Mugabe must pack his bags and leave for Zvimba (his rural home)".
Following Khupe's address, the women marched to Harvest House - MDC's headquarters.
The march - organised by MDC women - was in line with 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, commemorated from November 25 to December 10 every year.
Khupe claimed that domestic violence in Zimbabwe was being instigated by Mugabe's failure to properly run the country and bring meaningful change to the suffering masses.
" . . . saka ini ndinoziva kuti (what I know is that) physical violence inokonzerwa ne (is caused by) violence of poverty and starvation . . . the biggest culprit we (of) violence and starvation is none other than . . . Mugabe and Zanu PF," Khupe said.
She said Mugabe had failed to fulfil his 2013 election campaign promise to create 2, 2 million new jobs and that had led to untold suffering of many, adding that this has resulted in physical abuse in many families and the nation at large.
"The ball is now in your court, as women you are supposed to be change agents. It is high time for us as women to say enough is enough, Mugabe and Zanu PF have failed the people in the last 36 years," she said.
"As women, let's rise up and declare that enough is enough, Mugabe and Zanu PF must go. We gave them 36 years to change the people's welfare but they have failed, and that is the reason why we have so much domestic violence."
