The water crisis in Bulawayo has reached alarming levels with some residents in western suburbs going for a week without receiving a drop of the precious liquid amid fears of a serious health hazard.

For some months now, Bulawayo city has been experiencing some water problems amid indications that the city's water sources are fast drying up.

On paper, the city authorities have come up with rationing sessions which have been periodically reviewed, with the recent being 72 hours of rationing.

However, on the ground some residents in western suburbs have gone for seven days and nights which translate to 182 hours and the citizens are not happy with the authorities.

Bulawayo mayor Councillor Martin Moyo says though the prescribed time for rationing is 72 hours, the time might extend due to circumstances beyond their control with plans afoot to put a lasting solution to the problems.

The water crisis in the City of Kings has rekindled debate on the need to implement the Matabeleland-Zambezi Water Project which has been touted as the answer to the regional water problems.
