Government should speedily retrench civil servants and merge ministries to contain the high wage bill, the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) has said.

The lobby group said tax payer funds were being lost on expenditures that could be easily avoided.

"There is need to adopt a balanced budget which clearly justifies revenue sources and expenditures. There is therefore an urgent need to reduce the size of government and civil service wage bill" it said in a nine page document to Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa.

"Some ministries can be merged, the ghost worker issue brought to finality and those with farms can be relieved of their duties so that they concentrate on farming,".

The group said high level corruption is worrying.

"High profile arrests, convictions and impartiality in the justice system will send the right message".

However, Labour minister Prisca Mupfumira has ruled out civil service retrenchments saying government has no such plans.

That was after Chinamasa came under attack from the Cabinet when he announced massive job cuts of 25 000 , reducing the workforce to 273 000 by the end of 2017, slashing of salaries and suspension of bonuses for two years.
