Zvishavane TC employee jailed 2 years for fraud

Zverisha Mateya who was a cashier at Zvishavane Town Council (ZTC) was convicted and sentenced to two-and- half years in prison for defrauding the local authority of US$12 918.
Mateya was dismissed at ZTC on September 22, 2015 after a hearing found him guilty of defrauding council.
He was accused of receiving weekend vending bills, water bills,cemetery bills and rentals some of which he put to personal use between the month of January and June 2015.
Mateya would erroneously record funds which were paid every time when he did manual receipting if there was no electricity. He would feed a lesser amount than received in the company systems and take the other amount.
He appeared before Shepard Munjanja and six months were suspended on condition he does not commit a similar offence for the next five years.
One year was suspended on condition he pays back council $12 918 so he will save an effective one year.
