Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, (ARTUZ) national leadership today continued with the initiative of engaging political parties and civic society sharing our policy position with regards to the education sector. Today, 15 February 2017, the leadership met Tendai Biti the National President of the People's Democratic Party, (PDP).
ARTUZ is selling two policy positions with regard to rural education. We are passionately marketing the idea of adopting an Education equalisation fund and the establishment of a retention and attraction allowance for rural teachers.
The education equalisation fund will be used to upgrade rural schools to afford rural learners quality education as a genuine way of empowering them. This initiative will go a long way in the quest to attain sustainable development goal number 4 of accessibility of quality education.
The retention and attraction allowance for rural teachers will attract quality teachers in rural schools and further help to retain those currently deployed in rural schools.
Hon. Tendai Biti pledged to take up the issues in their advocacy and further promised to implement the policy propositions if elected to govern Zimbabwe.
The meeting also came at a time when our Union is mobilising for a national strike to begin 20 February demanding dates of bonus disbursement. Hon. Biti who is also a legal guru assured the Union that our planned job action is above board since we followed the dictates of the law by notifying the employer within 14 working days of the job action.
ARTUZ will continue engaging political actors and civic society leaders to lobby for support in advocating for the improvement of the quality of rural education.
