Civil Society reflection and way forward meeting on the new Curriculum

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), under the auspices of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) held a reflection and way forward meeting with civic society organisation as a way to start a process of bringing together stakeholders in the education sector to speak with one voice on the implementation of the new curriculum and the education amendment act.
After informative and robust discussions, the following resolutions were reached:
Resolutions
Various education stakeholders should come together under the auspices of Crisis Coalition and have a proper, well spell out strategy to address challenges in the Education sector around the new curriculum and the education act.
ARTUZ and other stakeholders should coordinate devolved Education Forums to connect with citizens and enhance their participation in education policy formulation and implementation.
ARTUZ should initiate an annual Education Indaba starting in 2017.
Education stakeholders must develop a collective position paper on the key policy issues in the sector such as the new curriculum, education amendment act and financing models. These should also be made in popular versions so as to reach out to citizens.
ARTUZ to enhance the gathering of students voices on the new curriculum and other policies in the education sector.
Education stakeholders should come up with measures to fight for safe schools by campaigning against politicisation and abuse of schools property in furtherance of political causes.
ARTUZ should engage the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission more on rights abuses in schools as well as expand engagement with relevant line ministries as well as parliamentary portfolio committees.
