The Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU) on Saturday donated 140 bags of cement to a community in Bulawayo Central District as the party lives up to its values and principles of empowering the people for them to be able to help themselves.

The donation comes after the people of Cabatsha, an informal settlement in uMvutshwa farm lost houses to windy rains in the just ended rainy season. Numerous houses were destroyed owing to poor building material and workmanship. This rendered a good number of the residents here homeless and prone to effects of bad weather from rains to the current cold spell.

Dr Dumiso Dabengwa, the President handed over the donation to the community who could not hide their joy and excitement, thanking the President for making time to interact and help them in their hour of need. An elder of the area, Lazarus Masuku remarked it was only ZAPU's president Dabengwa and his leadership that has come to their rescue since disaster struck.

The President was accompanied by Bulawayo Province Deputy Secretary Ruth Ncube, National Policy and Strategy Secretary Sakhile Sibanda and National Secretary for Information Publicity and Marketing Iphithule Maphosa.

President Dabengwa implored the recipients of the cement to use it wisely, promising the community the party will always find ways of improving their lives in the spirit of ZAPU founding values. He also suggested the settlement be formalized and turned into a residential area with all amenities from the Bulawayo City Council.

This was not the first time ZAPU has assisted this community as last year a football kit was handed over to Mafela FC by the party Spokesperson while maize seed for the just ended agricultural season was handed over by the party's provincial executive.
