Bulawayo central police, A tribal battleground
05 Apr 2018 at 14:56hrs | Views
Bulawayo Central Police continues to be a tribal battleground as Mthwakazi vendors and activists went through a horrific experience during their detention at Bulawayo Central Police Station. Such is becoming a daily predicament for Mthwakazi activists.
They went through a lot of torture, with all males being severely kicked by one Constable Mudzingwa who uttered obscene tribal utterances. They went on to pronounce that MaNdebere arikuzwitisa (Ndebeles are getting silly). Mudzingwa and other shona police officers threatened the suspects with the return of Gukurahundi. From the physical assault by Constable Mudzingwa, Mxolisi Mhlanga can barely walk without a support stick after being kicked hard on the knee.
One female police officer, picture attached, refused to speak in iSiNdebele and insisted to arrogantly speak in Shona, claiming that this country is for Shonas.
The suspects were charged with assault when they tried to effect a citizens arrest on Magumise who conned a lot of people of their monies in the pretex of securing them, vending stands.
In the unfolding of events at Bulawayo Police Station, Constable Mudzingwa kept addressing Magumise as 'Comrade', proving that the two had a political relationship. Since 2009 Magumise has corruptly milked out money from unsuspecting vendors before joining the notorious Magura Charumbira in terrorising our people. Magumise is surely a staunch Zanu PF hooligan.
The environment at Central Police Station clearly indicated that tribalism is now institutionalized in Matabeleland police stations. We feel for Ndebele officers who find themselves cornered in such hegemony. We pledge to work tirelessly to make sure that we attain freedom for them as well.
Meanwhile five of the six suspects appeared before magistrate at Tredgold and were remanded out of custody to the 13th of April 2018. The sixth suspect is yet to appear in court tomorrow after his charge was separated from the rest. Those remanded are Mxolisi Mhlanga, Thembani Moyo, Stanley Moyo, Sukoluhle Ncube and Ntombizodwa Sibanda and their two children.
We thank the people of Mthwakazi for packing the courtroom in solidarity with the suspects. We are expectant of the same support when Methembe Mhlanga appears in court tomorrow.
Mxolisi, Stanley and Tembani have been taken to Galen House for treatment of injuries sustained from Constable Mudzingwa's physical assaults.
Our appreciation to the the defense counsel of Thomas and Blessing Dube of Abameli Lawyers for Human Rights who have sacrificed their time to defend the people of Mthwakazi without pay.
