MDC-T 2019 May Day Statement
01 May 2019 at 05:07hrs | Views
The Movement for Democratic Change joins the ZCTU and indeed all the citizens of Zimbabwe in celebrating the many victories of workers throughout the world, notwithstanding the many challenges that still lie ahead for all Zimbabweans.
Because the overwhelming majority of workers in Zimbabwe have been retrenched we may sometimes be at fault in not stressing and repeating the importance of the organised Labour and the participation of workers in our struggle for a free and equitable Zimbabwe.
Both ZCTU and other individual workers' Unions have struck mighty blows and won victories for all of us in the history of this country against an evil regime of ZANU PF and its capital masters.
This May Day's celebrations come against the background of high levels of unemployment, starvation and untold human suffering due to selfish policies by a ZANU PF government designed to serve President Mnangagwa, capital and a gang of the ruling elite.
The few remaining workers in our country must fight and defeat the multipronged attack from both government and capital whose aim is to isolate workers from the rest of society, and a false narrative that Unions must only concern themselves with shop floor issues.
The recognition that workers rights could not be realised under the same predatory state which is Zimbabwe, has made you not only a formidable regiment in the army of workers' rights but of democracy also.
We in the MDC-T maintain that, if the democracy we struggle for is to have any meaning then it must include the realisation of the demands of workers.
Therefore the workers must continue the struggle to organise, in order to defend and assert their interests as against those of the employers. Since the current government has rigged the system in favour of the employers.
Indeed many are the trials and tribulations on the path of the workers but we say forward ever, backwards never.
