Statement by Canadian Minister Baird on Elections in Zimbabwe

OTTAWA, Canada - The Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird today issued the following statement regarding the recent elections in Zimbabwe

"Canada notes the results announced. However, Canada has serious concerns about the reported irregularities and lack of transparency of the democratic process. These irregularities and lack of transparency raise doubts about the results that can not credibly represent the will of the people.

"However, Canada congratulates the people of Zimbabwe for their peaceful participation in the first elections under the new constitution.

"We hope that the irregularities will be investigated and that we apply new transparency mechanisms to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.

"We remain deeply concerned by the situation of human rights in Zimbabwe. Canada will continue to work with the Zimbabwean people for a democratic and prosperous for more peaceful future, a future that respects the fundamental rights of the people. "
