MDC Human Rights day Statement

Today we join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Human Rights Day, which runs under the theme, 'Human Rights 365'.

While we would ordinarily use this day to celebrate our one year-old constitution which includes the Bill of Rights which protects the rights of all Zimbabweans against unfair treatment and exploitation, we are however forced to reflect and take stock of some of the gross human rights violations perpetrated on the people by the Zanu -PF government this past year. The conduct of Zanu PF has been nothing short of a national disgrace and deserves the censure of every Zimbabwean.

We note the gross abuse on the people of Chingwizi who after losing their homes and property to floods earlier this year were denied access to decent shelter, health and basic necessities. We recall the brutality with which the state sponsored police and army dealt with their demands for assistance from government. We recall the spine chilling arbitrary arrests and torture of old men, pregnant women and children.

We note how during campaigning, Zanu PF promised Zimbabweans heaven and earth, even allowing some to occupy farmland and residential stands not suitable for occupation only to evict them a few months later, rendering them homeless, exposed to starvation and diseases, case in point the numerous evictions/invasions particularly in Mazoe and the housing demolitions in Chitungwiza.

It is therefore disappointing that up to now, the Peace and Reconciliation Commission meant to ensure post conflict justice, healing and reconciliation has still not been set up, more than a year after elections. As MDC we believe that as long as the transgressions of the past have not been acknowledged, we can never fully be able to be at peace as a nation. One of the tragedies of this country since independence is that up to now there is no national debate of issues, as it is regarded as a threat to the Zanu PF power game. Killing those who are competing with you literally, is the most inhuman thing you can ever do. Bitterness and hurt will always remain. Surely the greatest act of negligence is for a government to stand idly by, watching it happen.

As we strive to adhere to this year's theme of making everyday a human rights day, we call for the speedy and transparent establishment of the peace and reconciliation commission. We also pay tribute our heroes, some of whom have suffered humiliation, pain, lost limbs and even life in the pursuit of human rights in this country.

The MDC will continue to insist that all Zimbabweans are treated with dignity and respect.
