Worldwide Mugabe-Must-Go Protests on Saturday
08 Feb 2015 at 03:33hrs | Views
So far the MDC-T (UK, USA, and SA), The Vigil (who demonstrate every Saturday outside the Zimbabwean Embassy in London), ROHR, Zimbabwe We Can, Occupy Africa Unity Square (OAUS), the Service Delivery Coalition, Zimbabweans United for Democracy (ZUNDE) and Zimbabwe Social Democrats have signed up to demonstrate on Robert Mugabe's Birthday - this Saturday.
ZAPU-UK has confirmed that it will participate in the demonstration outside the Zimbabwean Embassy in London and the group has also been joined by Zimbabwe Social Democrats whose secretary general Wilbert Mukori will speak at the demonstration meant to mark Robert Mugabe's last Birthday in Office.
Coalition members, including those in the US, Canada, South Africa and Australia have said they will demonstrate to demand and end to the rule of Mugabe's government which is impoverishing the masses because of its corruption.
Organisers are hoping that Zimbabweans all over the world will demonstrate to show their rejection of Robert Mugabe, who ironically is taking over the chairmanship of the Oganisation of African Unity successor, the African Union (AU), in a clear demonstration that the AU is now a club of dictators rather than a serious defender of the needs of the continent's citizens that its founders envisioned.
Demonstrations in Zimbabwe are usually met with violence and even murder, but some activists have said they will be held in Zimbabwe. They are demanding that President Robert Mugabe's government must go because it has failed to run the country and to deliver service, while also refusing to allow the holding of free and fair elections. . The coalition is inviting more Zimbabwean political, social, religions, online clubs, and any organisation of citizens who believe that something must now be done about Mugabe's rule, which is just going from one crisis to another and is now failing to pay its civil servants, to join the protest.
They are also asking the international community to pay more attention to Zimbabwe, especially now that Robert Mugabe will be controlling both regional organisations which would have been expected to put a check on his repressive excesses the SADC and the AU. His government has refused to implement reforms recommended by SADC to make elections free and transparent, and is accused of rigging the last three general elections, torturing opposition campaigners and corruption.
The demonstrations in are also intended to expose the hypocrisy by Western countries which claim to be implementing targeted sanctions in support the democratic demands of Zimbabweans, yet it is clear that the sanctions are being watered down and are ineffective.
Although it is not making headlines the slow disaster that is unfolding in Zimbabwe is translating into disease from drinking dirty water, deaths from lack of medicines in hospitals, fatal bus and car accidents from poorly maintained roads, and failure to provide insurance covers for the victims because of corruption, 80 percent unemployment and dependence on food aid.
Organisations that would like to be part of the coalition can indicate by contacting any of the member coalition organisations. The Theme is Last Birthday In Office: Mugabe Must Go, stressing that at 91 he is no longer providing any value after 34 years in office. His government has failed and is refusing to hold free and fair elections, with an independent Electoral Commission and an electronic voter's roll which can be checked.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change has been forced to go to court to interdict the government from going ahead with Parliamentary elections scheduled for March, but the courts are padded with Zanu (PF) cronies and nothing much is expected from them.
