GWANDA Mayor, Lionel Deniker has said it is not true that his operational province Matabeleland South has the largest number of criminals arguing that most people that commit crimes in his area are "criminals in transit."
His statements come after Justice George Chiweshe said according to court records at hand; Matabeleland South has the highest number of criminal offenses committed in 2011. Said the judge yesterday during the official opening ceremony of the 2012 High Court year: "If we had sufficient courtrooms, we would have at least two courts sitting per day.
"As a substantial number of criminal cases emanate from Matabeleland South, the alternative is opening of a High Court circuit in Matabeleland South.
"This is an option that has to be considered," he said in part. However, the 31 year old Gwanda mayor disagreed with the judge arguing that it is a distortion to allege that Matabeleland South has many criminals.
He said in an interview yesterday after the official ceremony: "The honourable judge distorted a fact because people that commit crimes are not always from Gwanda. They are just criminals in transit.
"As you know that we are the busiest province, with the busiest border post, mining and other activities, people come from all over and do all sorts of unlawful things then go.
"A closer look at the criminals caught will reveal to you that they come from Mashonaland Central, Matabeleland North and other areas," he said.
The mayor said his area had the best behaved people compared to other provinces.
