PRIME Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Sunday donated wheelchairs, blankets and food hampers to people living with disabilities in the resort town of Victoria Falls.

The donation made up of four wheelchairs, nine food hampers and 10 blankets was supposed to have been presented to the beneficiaries in Harare last year, as Christmas presents, for people living with disabilities.

The Principal Director in the PM's office, Mrs Thandiwe Hlabangana said Victoria Falls was the last town to receive the donation since it was not represented when representatives of people living with disabilities were given their presents last year.

"I have been sent here by the Prime Minister as he felt that you should have received your Christmas presents when others received theirs last year," she said.

Representing people living with disabilities, Mr Walter Ndlovu said the wheelchairs would go a long way in addressing the walking difficulties faced by paralysed people.

He called on well-wishers to first approach the intended beneficiaries to verify their real needs when it came to wheelchairs before coming to donate.

"We have had a situation where some people just come and dump wheelchairs in the name of donations. Remember the disabilities differ from person to person and these wheelchairs are not a one size fit all as they differ from size to purpose," he said.

Present at the brief donation ceremony was the Mayor for Victoria Falls, Councillor Nkosilathi Jiyane.
