A Madlambuzi man, Manyaka Moyo (59) is battling for life at the United
Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) after he was allegedly struck in the head with
an axe by his son Mehluli Moyo (31) following a beer brawl.
The Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday at about 7pm at Gotshombo area.
"Our preliminary investigations indicate that on the fateful day, the suspect, Mehluli Moyo and his father, Manyaka Moyo, were drinking beer at a local business centre. Later in the evening they then decided to go home and it looks like while on their way, the two men had a misunderstanding resulting in a fist fight," he said.
Sensing that he was being overpowered by his father, the son resorted to his axe, which he used to strike him twice in the head.
Soon after committing the offence, the suspect took to his heels leaving the victim lying unconscious.
"The suspect proceeded home where he informed his mother who then took the father to their homestead and a report was made to us leading to the arrest of the son," said Insp Dzirutwe.
He said the suspect would soon appear in court on an attempted murder charge.
The complainant sustained severe injuries on the head and he was rushed to the UBH for treatment where his condition is reportedly critical.
"We have since arrested the suspect and he is now assisting us with investigations. As police we would like to warn people against moving around carrying dangerous weapons particularly when they go for drinking escapades.
"We also would like to urge people to desist from the culture of violence in the event of disputes to avoid the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents," said the police spokesperson.
