THERE was commotion at a Chicken Inn branch in Gweru on Saturday night when a naked man entered into the food outlet before jumping onto the counter.
The man, only identified as Busani, reportedly started having some mental problems after taking a pesticide following a domestic dispute with his wife.
The incident, which has since become the talk of Gweru, occurred just before midnight.
Witnesses to the incident said business at the busy food outlet briefly came to a halt when workers abandoned their duties and ran away.
"I was relaxed taking my food when a naked man suddenly got into the premises and stood at the counter as if he wanted to buy some food just like any other client," said Mr Maxwell Muza, who witnessed the incident.
Muza said the man later jumped over the counter after realising that he was attracting many spectators as he stood speechlessly by the counter.
"At that point, workers, a majority of them women, then started screaming while fleeing from the man. Some workers jumped over the counter and fled from the food outlet," he said.
Another witness only identified as Mpostora said security personnel at the food outlet later wrestled the man who was resisting arrest.
"Police were then called in as reinforcements after which the man was arrested and dragged to Gweru Central Police Station.
"The police later transferred the man to Gweru Provincial Hospital as they suspected that he was mentally ill," he said.
Other witnesses said the man had just started facing mental problems after he tried to take his life by taking some pesticide following a domestic dispute with his wife.
"I am a close friend to Busani and he is a normal person. What happened was that he attempted to commit suicide by taking some pesticide but the dose only succeeded in disturbing his brains.
"He then became insane and started stripping his clothes. We were surprised that he was then seen in town naked and no one knows how he managed to get in town walking naked all the way from Mkoba," said another witness who claimed to be a neighbour to Busani in Mkoba Village 13.
Innscor Gweru branch manager Mr Sam Ngundu confirmed the incident.
"I was not around but I have heard the information about a suspected mentally ill man who invaded our shop on Saturday night," he said.
Busani, who declined to give his full name, yesterday denied having caused a scene at the food outlet.
He, however, confirmed that he became mentally disturbed after a botched suicide attempt and only got back to his senses when he was admitted to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
"I have just been discharged from the hospital and what I only know is that I had a misunderstanding with my wife and I decided that it was wise to take my life.
"It did not go according to my plan and I was surprised when I later saw myself on a hospital bed on Sunday afternoon," said Busani.
