A MATOBO woman was axed to death while her two nieces were stabbed and left wounded after they were attacked by two unidentified men while they were sleeping at night.
Mrs Elita Ncube (54) and her nieces Langelihle Ncube (13) and Eveline Ncube (25) were sleeping outside their bedroom hut when they were attacked.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Philani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Friday at around 2AM at Fox Farm Resettlement in Matobo District.
"I can confirm that we are investigating a murder and attempted murder case which occurred in Matobo District on Friday morning. A woman was axed to death while her two nieces were stabbed and left wounded by two unidentified men.
"The injured are admitted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals. We are yet to arrest the suspects as well as establish the motive behind the attack. We are appealing to anyone who might have information on the identity and whereabouts of the suspects to contact any nearest police station," he said.
Yesterday, officials at UBH said the patients had been discharged.
The village head, Mr Clement Ndlovu, said Mrs Ncube and her nieces decided to sleep outside their bedroom hut in order to escape mosquitoes while her husband Mr Shadreck Ncube slept inside the hut.
Mr Ndlovu said two unidentified men struck Mrs Ncube with an axe on the neck and above the left eye. He said the men went on to stab Langelihle with a knife on the neck and right shoulder while they stabbed Eveline on the neck and above her eye.
"The nieces screamed and one of them fled to where Mr Ncube was sleeping. When Mr Ncube came out, the two men had fled from the homestead. It seems the two nieces don't know the identity of the two men,'' said Mr Ndlovu.
He said the incident had left the community shaken as the motive behind the attack was unknown.
"We are terrified as a community because we are not sure whether this was an act of criminals that have invaded our area or whether it was an act of vengeance.
"The culprits are not known and our fear is that they might still be within our community," he said.
