Matobo Rural District Council (RDC) says land that was earmarked for the development of Maphisa Growth Point has been exhausted.

This is despite the high demand for residential and commercial stands still being experienced.

Maphisa Growth Point is among the fastest growing areas in Matabeleland South Province owing to economic activities such gold mining and investment in infrastructure development by locals living in neighbouring Botswana and South Africa.

So rapid is the development in Maphisa that the growth point's boundary has been exhausted despite the continued high demand for stands.

Matobo RDC chief executive officer Mr Elvis Sibanda said the local authority has come up with a concept plan which if approved by the government gives council the green light to develop infrastructure beyond its current boundary.

Residents of Maphisa expressed satisfaction with the services being provided by the local authority but said employment creation and rural industrialisation should also be a priority.

The community also wants to see banks, shopping centres and recreational facilities being established so that the growth point eventually becomes a town.

Matabeleland South currently has three urban centres namely Gwanda, Beitbridge and Plumtree.
