Attempts to play a Good Samaritan have cost a Nkayi man his life after being stabbed on the chest and died on the spot by his drinking mate over a box of matches.
On Sunday evening, Phumulani Sibanda (31) wanted to be peace maker between a bar lady Sikhohlisiwe Sibanda (23) and his drinking mate Melaphi Ndlovu aged 24.
Ndlovu had approached the bar lady with the intention of buying a pack of matches but Sibanda said she had closed Dumeya Bottle Store.
That did not go down well with Ndlovu who started to verbally assault the bar lady.
It was at that point that the now deceased Sibanda attempted to intervene, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Siphiwe Makonese said.
"The information we have is that Sibanda who was drinking with Ndlovu wanted to intervene in the matches dispute. However, Ndlovu who was drunk and angry suddenly drew out a knife and stabbed Sibanda on the chest" Makonese said.
Ndlovu then fled leaving Sibanda to die on the spot.
Ndlovu has since been arrested.
