A Lower Gweru man stabbed his friend to death following an argument over allegations that the accused was spreading rumours that the now deceased had broken window panes at his late brother's house.
The police, who identified the dead man as Kwanele Ncube (40) of Guduza Village under Chief Sogwala in Lower Gweru, said Ncube sustained the fatal wounds on 20 February.
Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Ncube confronted his aggressor, the suspect, Joseph Phiri (29), over why he was going about spreading "falsehoods" that he had gone to his late brother's house and broken window panes.
"It is alleged that on 20 February 2012, Kwanele Ncube visited Phiri at his homestead but could not locate him. He went to a local business centre, Sparrow, where he found Phiri drinking beer. Ncube went on to ask the accused why he was alleging that he broke window panes at his late brother's house. Ncube then told Phiri he was going to the police to report the matter.
"Phiri suggested that he accompany him to the police but Ncube refused and this did not go well with the suspect.
"He then pulled out a knife from his trouser pocket and stabbed Ncube once on the left side of the chest and once on the right shoulder," he said.
Asst Insp Mahoko said the matter was reported to the police and Ncube was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he was quickly transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare on 27 February.
He said Ncube died as a result of stab wounds last Wednesday.
"The police managed to arrest Phiri and he has since appeared in court. He was remanded out of custody but the man has since disappeared. Phiri was not located at his last known address when the police went to look for him. We have since launched a manhunt for the suspect," said Asst Insp Mahoko.
"We are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could help us track Phiri to contact their nearest police station. We also appeal to members of the public to seek the counsel of a third party whenever they have a disagreement. Taking the law into your own hands attracts serious punishment that could result in one spending time in jail."
The police said the body was still in Harare at Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
