A Plumtree man Coaster Sibanda (25) has been sentenced to 280 hours community service for impregnating his cousin with whom he now has a three week old baby.

However, the cousin, Melody Sibanda evaded the incest charge because of the baby.

The two were arrested and charged with having sexual intercourse within a degree of relationship.

They are related as fathers are brothers.

The two pleaded guilty to the charge when they appeared before Plumtree magistrate Livared Phuillimon this week.

For the offence the man was sentenced to 12 months in prison but four were suspended  years on condition that he does commit a similar offence within the next five years and the rest of the sentence on condition that he completes 280 hours of community service.

The woman escaped prison when her 12 month imprisonment sentence was wholly suspended.

The court heard that between May and August 2011, the two engaged in sexual intercourse on a number of occasions.

It was further revealed that the matter was discovered when Melody developed a bulging stomach and upon interrogation by relatives she confessed having an affair with Coaster resulting in teh pregnancy.
