A parliamentary committee on Human Rights has revealed that an estimated 80 percent of inmates in Hwange and Binga prisons are facing rape charges.
Committee chairperson Misheck Marava told Senate on Tuesday that there was need to investigate why rape was prevalent in those areas.
The committee presented the report to Senate following a tour of Khami, Mlondolozi, Binga and Hwange prisons.
"We noted with concern that 80 percent of prisoners at Hwange and Binga provinces are awaiting rape charges. We urge the Ministry of Justice and legal Affairs to carry out a thorough research on the causes rape in the two areas," said Marava.
Meanwhile, Marava said inmates complained of inadequate clothing, food and anti-retroviral drugs.
"The female inmates have complained over the shortage of sanitary ware. Foreign prisoners also complained that they were incarcerated and no information as passed to their respective embassies about their arrest and detention."
