A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD girl from Halisupi village in Gwanda has been arrested for allegedly dumping her baby in a pit latrine after she single-handedly delivered.
Stella Nyathi of Halisupi village in Gwanda is alleged to have given birth on March 19 between 18:00 hours and 19:00 hours, after which she secretly threw the infant in the pit latrine.
Police suspect that Stella could have committed the offence on instruction from her 22-year-old brother-in-law, Dickson Ndlovu, who allegedly impregnated her but did not want the child.
Police said that Stella dumped the infant after allegedly being instructed by Ndlovu who already has a one-and-half year-old baby with her.
"The infant was born, after which it was thrown into the pit latrine. We have arrested both the mother (Stella) and the father (Ndlovu) and are in police custody," said the police spokesman.
Police spokesman said Stella pretended to have gone to the pit latrine to answer the call of nature when she actually went to deliver.
He said the incident was discovered by Stella's 88-year-old grandmother, Beatrice Phiri, who trailed her to the pit latrine.
Both Stella and Phiri have been charged with infanticide and will appear in court tomorrow.
