CIVIC society is planning protest marches in Gwanda in show of solidarity to the suspended Mayor, Lionel De Necker.
De Necker, an MDC member was suspended last week Thursday by minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Ignatius Chombo on allegations of defying ministerial orders. The solidarity rallies are set for before end of April.
Chairman of Progressive United Residents Association, Reason Ngwenya Said in a statement, "Every time I read such material from Chombo, I feel like throwing up. I suggest that we not only appeal, but also write a letter and remind him that De Necker was elected by the people of Gwanda, not appointed by Chombo or Mugabe.
"In fact, I suggest that a day be set aside in April where all supporters of MDC and other progressive democrats travel to Gwanda for a solidarity rally to show Chombo and the other ZANU-PF clowns that they are worthless to us " said Ngwenya.
BPRA said it is convinced that Chombo may be abusing the excessive powers conferred upon him by the Urban Council's Act to advance his political interests by unilaterally firing and suspending local government officials belonging to opposition political parties, thus negating the elections that put them into power.
It said it believes it is no coincidence that all local authorities that Minister Chombo has targeted since the turn of the year (including Mutare, Bulawayo, Gwanda and Zvishavane) are run by parties other than that which he belongs to.
