Matobo villagers drag controversial Chombo to High Court

Ordinary villagers in Matobo district in Matabeleland South have taken controversial Local Government and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo to the High Court over his imposition of five losing Zanu-PF supporters as special interest councillors.

The Zanu-PF members who lost in the 2008 elections are Sanders Siziba, Never Khanye, Sithembile Ndlovu, Jane Phuthi and Pilate Dube.

They hold senior positions in Zanu-PF ranging from central committee members to aspiring members of parliament.

The villagers who are represented by Job Sibanda of Job Sibanda and Associates are Garikayi Dhliwayo, Themba Dube, Henry Ncube, Gladys Ncube, Priscilla Sibanda and Morinah Sibanda.

According to court papers, Chombo, the chairperson of the Matobo Rural District Council, the CEO of Matobo RDC and the Matopo RDC are respondents.

The Zanu-PF members are the other respondents.

Reads the papers in part :"Applicant hereby applies through the Chamber for an order restraining the 1st respondent from appointing the 5th to 9th respondent as appointed councillors in terms of the Rural District Council's Act pending the determination of review of proceedings to be instituted in the Administrator Court against the 1st respondents appointment of the said individuals."

Chombo has been appointing Zanu-PF supporters as special interests councillors in countless local authorities.
