A Gwanda traffic cop was on Monday run over by a car as its driver ignored the law enforcement agent's signs for him to stop at a roadblock.
The policeman who fractured a right leg and ribs died upon admission at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe said the driver of the vehicle was arrested on the scene and is now facing culpable homicide charges.
"The incident occurred on Monday at about 3am, the police constable was manning a roadblock in Gwanda town when a South African registered Mazda 323 approached. He waved at the driver to stop but the motorist did not heed the sign.
"After realising that the car was not stopping, the constable moved to the right side of the road and the vehicle also moved in the same direction and run over him," said Dzirutwe.
"The constable sustained head injuries and a fractured leg and ribs. He was rushed to UBH but died upon admission. The driver was immediately arrested and is expected in court soon."
Motorists have over the years complained over the number of roadblocks along the country's highways, accusing traffic cops of demanding bribes.
Recently, Parliament resolved to compel the police to reduce the number of roadblocks on the country's roads.
