Three Lupane men have been arrested for entrapping with wires a bull elephant worth $50 000.

Fayineli Tshuma (48), Mpumelelo Khumalo (37) and Mackson Tshuma (54) on Wednesday appeared before Lupane magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba for contravening the Trapping of Animals Act.

The trio was granted $100 bail each and remanded them to June 20 for trial.

Charges against the three are that on 1 April the trio went on a poaching mission at Ngamo Forest at Masungamala in Lupane. Upon arrival, they allegedly set a wire snare on an elephant path.

Six days later, the three reportedly went to check the snare and found a dead bull elephant caught in the snare. They allegedly skinned the protected species before taking some meat and the two tusks and set the rest of the carcass on fire.

However, the trio's luck ran out when police detectives received a tip off and raided Fayineli and Khumalo's respective homesteads on 3 May and recovered 8kgs of elephant meat from the latter's bedroom hut.

The two then led the detectives to the discovery of the two tusks buried at Khumalo's maize field along with dried elephant meat weighing 24kg.

The police recovered some  more meat at Mackson's homestead .
