A Mbembesi villager is lucky to be alive after his neighbour stabbed him three times  with an object  on Sunday.

Clever Moyo of Clonmore Village 2 in Mbembesi allegedly attacked Mgcini Mpofu of the same village at about 10pm when the pair was coming from a beer drink.

The police spokesperson for Matabeleland North, Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese, confirmed the incident yesterday.

She said the two villagers were coming from a beer drink when they started arguing over an undisclosed issue.

"Moyo then produced a sharp object and allegedly stabbed his  friend twice on the back and once in the lower abdomen. Mpofu screamed and shouted for help and villagers at nearby homesteads came to his rescue," said Asst Insp Makonese.

She said Moyo disappeared into some bushes.

"The villagers made a report to the police and the injured man was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital. Police managed to track down Moyo and arrested him. He is being charged with attempted murder," she said.

Asst Insp Makonese urged villagers to solve disputes amicably without resorting to violence.

"Whenever a misunderstanding arises, it is important to seek mediation from elders because violence only leads to bloodshed and possible lengthy jail terms," she said.

Asst Insp Makonese warned villagers against going to beer drinks carrying weapons, saying it was easy for them to use the weapons on others when drunk.

"A drunken person is not always in full control of his senses and is likely to resort to violence if a weapon is close at hand. We therefore urge villagers to avoid being armed, especially when going out to drink beer," she said.
