Matabeleland South province has reportedly been hardest hit by the drought following poor rainfalls this year a development that has seen farmers in the area selling their cattle for a song.

The province, according to farmers has recently experienced an influx of cattle buyers from Mashonaland provinces who buy their cattle for as little as $50 yet some exchange their beasts for solar panels and motor vehicle engines.

Farmers are describing the act as a deliberate sabotage to deprive them of their wealth.

Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union President Donald Khumalo said farmers in Matabeleland had become targets of sharks who visit the region to cheat them. We are saying they must not sell their cattle under duress because that does not benefit them. We will be soon coming with a programme which will see farmers benefiting from cattle feeding schemes and we say they must stop losing them unnecessary,' said Khumalo.

He urged the communal farmers to join unions in their locality in order to learn more on cattle business and get protection from clandestine cattle buyers.
