A 37-year-old Binga man has been sentenced to 105 hours community service for pelting his neighbour with stones accusing him of stealing mbanje (cannabis) from his garden.
David Muzamba on Thursday pleaded guilty to an assault charge before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu. He was then convicted and sentenced to three months in jail, which was wholly suspended on condition he performs 105 hours of community service at Chabwidi Primary School starting on Monday.
It was the State case that on May 13, Muzamba was drinking beer at a fellow villager's homestead after picking cotton from his fields. He accused his neighbour Simulonga George Dube of stealing dagga from his fields before pelting him with stones.
Dube took to his heels with Muzamba in hot pursuit, stoning him. He reportedly sustained serious injuries.
A report made to the police led to the arrest of Muzamba.
In his plea, Muzamba admitted assaulting Dube, but said the reason was because he had stolen bananas from his fields, not mbanje. He also said the police docket was misleading.Ends
