Zimbabwean police have launched a an operation targeting motorists who fail to display temporary import registration plates after importing their vehicles.

The blitz started in Beitbridge on Monday morning.

National traffic police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza said the operation was  part of efforts to restore sanity on the roads.

A number of motorists mostly those importing second hand vehicles from Japan and other countries who were caught unawares were arrested and fined.

Prior to the new order, importers would proceed to their respective destinations without displaying temporary registration plates pending registration in various centres across the country.

Chakanza yesterday said the arrests were in line with the country's traffic regulations.
