A 37-year-old man from Chivi allegedly struck a fellow reveller to death following a misunderstanding over whose turn it was to buy the next round of beer.

Masvingo acting police provincial spokesperson, Assistant Charity Mazula confirmed the incident that happened on 26 May at Mudadisi Village under Chief Mudyangove and identified the deceased as Tiritose Shandu (40) of the same village.

She said at around 6pm Chamunorwa Munashe and Shandu were drinking beer at Madzivadondo Business Centre when a misunderstanding arose over whose turn it was to buy the next round.

The two nearly came to blows and Shandu decided to leave the beer drink and went home.

At home he asked his brother's wife, Ms Patricia Chinondo (35) to prepare food for him since his wife was away. At around 8pm Munashe arrived at the homestead and demanded payment from Ms Chinondo for work he had done at her garden.

Shandu intervened and advised him to come the following day for his money but Munashe would have none of it, insisting on being paid immediately.

Shandu then force-marched Munashe out of the homestead and on reaching the edge of the yard, Munashe allegedly picked up an axe handle and struck Shandu on the head before running away. The deceased fell to the ground bleeding profusely while calling out for help.

Ms Chinondo rushed and rendered first aid.  Shandu spent the night at the homestead and was only taken to Chivi District Hospital the following morning after making a report to Mashava Police Station.

At Chivi District Hospital, he was referred to Masvingo General Hospital where he died at around 2pm.

Before police could not arrest Munashe as four days after the death of his victim, Munashe was found hanging from a tree at about 10am by Ms Mary Masocha (35) of the same village who was on her way to Shandu's funeral.

Asst Insp Mazula said Munashe's body was taken to Chivi District Hospital for a postmortem.

She urged people to seek assistance from elders and local traditional leaders when disputes arise instead of resorting to violence.
