The people of Matabeleland have been forgotten by their leaders who seem interested in pushing the agenda of their handlers in Harare, a youth leader has said.

Early this week, Bulawayo Metropolitan governor and resident minister, Cain Mathema, accused the city residents of "sitting back" and "complaining too much" about the economy instead of doing something to revive the city's ailing business sector.

However, Zapu national executive council (NEC) youth representative Mqondisi Moyo has hit back, accusing the leaders of "neglecting their own people".

"Matabeleland is where it is today because of leaders like Mathema and his other Zanu-PF counterparts," he said.

"We cannot be the ones to blame for the so called failure of the city because he is the one who should be doing something for Bulawayo and Matabeleland as our leader in government."

Moyo said the youths in Bulawayo are particularly frustrated at the closure of city firms that have left them, "destitute, without employment."

"We have a problem in Bulawayo where companies are closing and relocating to Harare," he said.

"This is leaving many young people unemployed and it is not their fault that they are sitting back or complaining. We have seen nothing coming from our governor concerning this relocation.

"Where does he expect people to work since companies are relocating?

"He is forgetting the people of Matabeleland and pushing the agenda of his superiors in Harare."
