FOUR daring armed robbers got away with $19 000 in cash from N Richards Wholesale at Jerera Growth Point after shooting dead a security dog before tying its owner with strings.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the incident that happened on 6 June at around 1am at Jerera Growth Point, Zaka, in Masvingo and said the robbers were still at large.
He said on the fateful day, a guard employed by Fawcett Security Company, Mr Nesbit Gondo (26), was manning N Richards
Wholesale with his security dog when he saw four men approaching. Two of the suspected robbers were allegedly carrying satchels on their backs.
The men were allegedly threatening to attack him and on realising that they were advancing, he allegedly set his dog on them.
One of the robbers allegedly produced a pistol and shot dead the dog before ordering Mr Gondo to lie down to which he complied.
They then tied both his hands and legs using a string after which they allegedly forced open the wholesale door where they allegedly blasted the safe using dynamite before escaping with $19 674 and R2 090 in cash.
The robbers disappeared after taking the loot leaving the security guard still tied. Passersby who heard him shouting for help rescued Mr Gondo the following morning.
After he was disentangled he went to Zaka police where he made a report.
Insp Matake said they had since launched a manhunt and investigations were in progress.
He appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to the arrest of the robbers to approach their nearest police station.
"We appeal to members of the public to assist in our investigations. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the robbers can come forward to us or notify the nearest police so that we can bring these criminals to book," said Insp Matake.
