The Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Constantine Chiwenga says the defence forces have an obligation of assisting government in alleviating challenges facing communities.

General Chiwenga said this after touring Murongwe Primary School in Dande Valley, Mt Darwin, which is undergoing a major facelift after the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) adopted the school for construction at a cost of over US$500 000.

General Chiwenga commended the AFZ Commander, Air Marshal Perence Shiri for prioritising education by providing funding for the construction of the school.

Air Marshal Shiri said the air force was touched by the plight of the Dande Valley community which he said was lagging behind in development as a result of the disturbances brought about by the liberation struggle and the subsequent RENAMO bandits' era.

The AFZ is using its charity fund to assist the construction of the primary school and has also pledged to assist in the construction of a secondary school in the area.

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) pledged to donate 240 tonnes of maize to alleviate food shortages in the area.
