The Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo has officially installed Ouheng Nare as substantive Chief Marupi of Dililashaba communal lands in Gwanda District.

Chief Marupi becomes the youngest chief in the country at the age of 16.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Chombo said in line with the people's culture, it is important for everyone to accord Chief Marupi the respect and honour that comes with his position in society despite his young age.

Minister Chombo expressed concern that chieftainship wrangles that can be resolved amicably among families are being dragged to the courts.

Governor and Resident Minister for Matabeleland South Province, Angeline Masuku said the installation of Chief Marupi will enable the smooth implementation of developmental programmes in the area.

A family member, Mr Mtateho Marupi expressed disgruntlement over the installation ceremony, saying the newly installed chief was too young to assume such responsibility, adding that it is deviation of their culture.

However, it has been agreed that Chief Marupi's uncle, will for the next two years act on behalf of the new leader who is still pursuing his education.

Chief Marupi takes over from his father, Lawrence Nare who died in 2008.

The occasion saw the delegates and the local community showering the new chief with gifts.
