GWANDA provincial magistrate-in-charge of Matabeleland South Mr Douglas Zvenyika has died at 43.

Mr Zvenyika was involved in an accident on Saturday morning when his car, a Mazda B2200, hit a goat at the 135km peg along the Gwanda-Beitbridge highway, resulting in it veering off the road and overturning.

Acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Province, Sergeant Loveness Mangena, confirmed the death of Mr Zvenyika.

Mr Zvenyika was reportedly driving to his mine when the accident occurred at about 10.30am.
"I can confirm that on Saturday we attended to a scene of an accident where a Mazda B2200 pick-up truck driven by Mr Zvenyika hit a goat. He was driving towards Beitbridge and when he approached the 135km peg, he hit a goat which had strayed onto the road resulting in him losing control of the vehicle," said Sgt Mangena.

She said Mr Zvenyika sustained serious head and chest injuries and was rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital where he was later transferred to UBH, but died on admission.

"The vehicle veered off the road, overturned and rolled several times and in the process hit an electricity pole before landing on its wheels again. Police are investigating the matter," said Sgt Mangena.

She appealed to motorists to exercise caution when driving in areas with a lot of livestock and wild animals.

The police also warned villagers against cutting the fence along highways as that leads to accidents as animals stray onto the roads.

"We want to urge motorists to exercise extreme caution especially in areas where there are animals. Villagers should also avoid cutting the fence as this leads to loss of innocent lives due to stray animals," said Sgt Mangena.

Mr Zvenyika was born on 6 October 1969 in Makoni District, Manicaland.

He did his secondary education at St Theresa Mission in Rusape before proceeding to Hardville High School in Mutare for his A-levels.

Mr Zvenyika trained as a magistrate at the Judicial College of Zimbabwe and finished the course in 1996.

He joined the magistrates department as a magisterial assistant on 3 February 1997 at the Harare Magistrates Court. Mr Zvenyika was sworn in as a full-time magistrate on 15 December 1997 at the same station before being transferred to Gwanda Magistrates' Court on 6 May 2002.

In Gwanda, Mr Zvenyika rose through the ranks and became senior magistrate on 31 December 2004.

On 1 February 2006, he was transferred to Esigodini Magistrates' Courts before being promoted provincial magistrate on 31 July 2006. Mr Zvenyika was appointed provincial magistrate-in-charge of Matabeleland South on 29 August 2008, a position he held at the time  of his death.

Mourners are gathered at his house, Number 13 Seventh Avenue, Gwanda.

Mr Zvenyika will be buried at his rural home in Dewedzo Village in Rusape tomorrow.
