A MINDA High School history teacher has been arraigned before a Gwanda regional court for allegedly raping a 17-year-old pupil.

The teacher, Meluleki Moyo (29) of St Anna, in Kezi pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Gwanda regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza on Wednesday.

He was remanded in custody to today after his lawyer Mr Lozithelo Mpofu of R Ndlovu and Company Law firm indicated he wanted to apply for discharge.

The State led by Mr Johannes Tlou alleges that sometime in October last year, Moyo summoned the complainant to his office during study time after 4.30pm and she complied.

The girl entered the office and sat on the chair while Moyo sat on the table with the door closed, but not locked.

The court heard that by calling her to his office he intended to ask her why she was turning down his love proposal.

The girl allegedly told her she would not agree to his proposal because he was her teacher.

The State alleges that Moyo took a condom from his trousers pocket and when the complainant tried to escape, he grabbed her.

The court was told that he raped her once.

He allegedly threatened her with assault if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
The girl allegedly left for the hostels and did not tell anyone about the matter.

She later revealed the matter during the school holidays in December last year when she visited an orphanage in Bulawayo.

An administrator at the orphanage phoned the school on 24 March this year and the matter was reported to the police.
