A 27-year-old man from Seshanke area in Nkayi yesterday appeared before the courts for allegedly raping his 13-year-old niece before bribing her with two packets of biscuits and $5.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, appeared before Nkayi magistrate Ndumo Masuku to answer to a charge of rape.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to October 8. The magistrate also advised him to apply to the High Court for bail.
Prosecutor Maxwell Hapanyengwi told the court that sometime this month, the man bought two vanilla cream biscuits in a bid to entice the victim. During the evening, the victim brought him supper in his bedroom hut.
The man allegedly asked to be intimate with the girl, but she refused. He reportedly forced her to lie down and raped her once. After the act, the man gave the girl biscuits and money before asking her not to tell anyone about the incident.
But the girl informed a member of the neighbourhood watch committee who arrested the man.
