A 25-YEAR-OLD suspected border jumper from Zaka area in Masvingo committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree using a rope, police said yesterday.
The acting police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, Sergeant Loveness Mangena, said the man whom he identified as Innocent Makhado, committed suicide on Saturday last week in a bushy area near Beitbridge Border Post.
"Our investigations indicate that Makhado illegally entered the country through Beitbridge Border Post and proceeded to Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus where he bought a rope. He then went to the nearby bush and committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree," she said.
The body was discovered by a passerby at around 11.40am who then reported the matter to the police who attended the scene.
Sgt Mangena said they discovered a suicide note and a valid passport, which had not been stamped by immigration authorities on both sides of the border, an indication that he illegally entered the country.
According to the suicide note, Makhado killed himself because of social problems.
The body was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital mortuary and a post-mortem was waived as police suspected no foul play.
"As police, we continue to urge people seek counselling first from relatives or community leaders whenever facing social problems rather than resorting to killing themselves," said the police spokesperson.
The incident comes barely a week after another 32-year-old Beitbridge man who was accused of raping his 14-year-old cousin, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree using a piece of wire.
The incident occurred in Nhwali area of Beitbridge District.
