Police officers living in disused holding cells

Police officers and their families at Mbembezi Police Station in Matabeleland North are living in disused police holding cells due to acute accommodation shortages.
"It is embarrassing that some officers are staying with their families in cells meant for accused persons. In fact they are not even fit for accused persons - that is why they were abandoned," an officer, who refused to be named for fear of victimisation.
The toilet bowls (which are flushed from outside) have been filled with concrete in an attempt to make the cells habitable, but they are very small and have poor ventilation.
"Those staying in these cells are living like pigs," said another officer.
Like most houses at the station, the cells have satellite dishes.
