Judgment in the case involving former Zanu-PF district co-ordinating committee member for Nkayi, Sithabile Ndebele, charged with possession of mbanje is set to be delivered on December 3.

Ndebele, through her lawyer Kucaca Phulu, has denied the charge.

She is out of custody on $100 bail.

On Monday, she told Nkayi magistrate Ndumo Masuku that a man, who identified himself as Andrew Ncube, visited her home during the night and asked to leave his bag containing mbanje under the pretext he was going to look for accommodation somewhere and would return to collect it. Ndebele alleged that the man, however, did not return.

In July, Ndebele claimed that she had been given the mbanje leaves by a traditional healer, adding she was made to understand the leaves were an ordinary medicinal herb for the treatment of asthma.

The State led by Maxwell Hapanyengwi told the court that Ndebele got into trouble after her daughter doing Form Three at Hlangabeza High School allegedly went to school with dagga in her satchel. The drug fell out of the satchel in the presence of other students, who immediately alerted their teachers and police.

It is the court case that while the students were still at the police station, Ndebele heard of the matter and stormed the police station accusing police officers of arresting her daughter without her consent.

Police later conducted a search at her home and allegedly recovered loose marijuana weighing 100 grammes in her bedroom, leading to her arrest.
