President Robert Mugabe, says former ZIPRA forces and the people of Matabeleland North as well as traditional leaders must be the first to benefit from the mining of coal and the extraction of methane gas at Gwayi River in Lupane.
Mugabe made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf at the ground breaking ceremony of a joint project between Sunlight Energy of China and Old Stones Investment, an arm of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
Geared to start operations early next year, the US$2,1 billion investment will employ more than 4000 workers who will start with open cast mining of coal and the building of two power stations.
The investment will also create a chemical company which will utilise the methane gas to manufacture fertiliser and coal tar for road construction.
Speaking at the same occasion, Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa said in a speech read on his behalf, that there is need to give the energy sector priority and commended the Gwayi River investment for reducing the burden on the fiscus.
