THE Ministry of Local Government, Urban and Rural Development through its Civil Protection Unit, has donated an ambulance to Gwanda District.
The ambulance is equipped with some medical accessories such as a machine to check the patient's blood pressure, oxygen inhaler, thermometers and a modern stretcher bed, among other things.
The ambulance, which is furnished with modern ambulance equipment, resembles a mobile clinic and is expected to benefit both urban and rural people in Gwanda District.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Gwanda town on Sunday, Matabeleland South Provincial Governor and Resident Minister Angeline Masuku said the donation came at an opportune time during the festive season when road accidents are occur frequently.
"We are aware that our province has become prone to road accidents, veld fires and hail storms where lives are lost. Therefore, the donation will go a long way towards assisting to quickly respond to disasters so as to save lives especially during the festive season when road traffic volumes generally increase," she said.
Masuku urged the Gwanda town municipality to handle the vehicle with care so as to render a longer service to the community.
She said similar donations in the province are due to occur when some of the districts in the province would benefit.
"We need to fight disasters throughout the province and it is my hope that similar gestures would also be offered to other districts in the province," said Masuku.
This donation would bring to three the number of ambulances in the Gwanda Municipality.
Receiving the donation, the acting mayor for Gwanda town, Ms Thokozile Sibanda, said the new ambulance would augment the small fleet of ambulances so as to render better health services to the community.
"We are grateful to the Ministry of Local Government for this valuable donation and we assure you that the vehicle will be kept well. We have ambulances, but not have this modern type," she said.
