Seven people died and several others were injured yesterday in two separate road accidents which occurred at Nkenyani Bridge in Lower Gweru while another one occurred along Masvingo-Mbalabala road.

In Lower Gweru, the driver of a commuter omnibus veered off the road as he approached the bridge and plunged into the river head-long early this morning.

The commuter omnibus had 21 passengers on board.

One passenger died on the spot, two on admission at Gweru Provincial hospital while 18 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Of the 18, only two have been treated and discharged, while 16 are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

Acting Midlands Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said initial investigations indicate that the driver of the commuter omnibus might have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

In another accident, a Toyota Noah with 11 passengers from Masvingo travelling towards Zvishavane burst its rear tyre resulting in the vehicle swerving before overturning twice.

Two passengers died on the spot while two others died on admission at Zvishavane District Hospital.

Four were injured and admitted at the same hospital, while two are reported to be in a critical condition while one escaped with minor injuries.

Assistant Inspector Mahoko reminded motorists to exercise caution especially during the wet season when roads are slippery.
