Two men under Chief Mola's area in Kariba were last week each sentenced to two years in prison for trapping and killing a hippopotamus.
Karoi magistrate Mr Obidience Matare, however, conditionally suspended five months of the jail terms and a further 10 months on condition they pay Nyaminyami Rural District Council US$2 500 by December 30 this year.
Wilson Jairos (57) and Lakeous Siampongo (37) pleaded guilty to contravening Section 3 of the Trapping of Animals Act (Chapter 20:21) when they appeared before Mr Matare on Thursday.
Prosecutor Mr Webster Dimingo told the court that on January 9 this year, the duo connived to set up five snares to trap some hippopos in an area they usually grazed.
On the next morning, they found one of the giant mammals trapped. They then killed it and shared the meat.
Acting on a tip-off, police swooped on Siampongo's home and recovered semi-dried meat in his bedroom. They also found the same type of meat in Jairos' bedroom.
